Project Description

Making medical training more accessible and adaptable

Together with Laerdal Medical, I looked at how this training can become more tangible for students and how it enables more self-learning and repeatable training. With this project I wanted to create an example of how designing for such a situation can be approached: By using modern technologies and studying the needs of users.
»AVA« is a study of how dematerialization and the introduction of virtual reality fill gaps in the previous learning process. Student independence can be increased, costs for educational institutions can be reduced and a seamless user experience can be created.

RESEARCH

RESEARCH

In collaboration with Laerdal Medical, our project aimed to revolutionize auscultation training by making it more accessible and adaptable. Extensive research was conducted to understand the current challenges faced by students and educators in traditional auscultation training methods. We delved into the limitations of physical models and explored the potential benefits of incorporating modern technologies such as virtual reality.

Understanding user needs

Main painpoints

“students rely on availability of patients and teachers for training lung auscultation”

Physician, public health and clinical medicine department (Umeå University)

“students always need a supervisor to use the simulators”

Associate professor nursing school (UiS Stavanger)

Associate professor & 2 teachers, department of nursing (Umeå University – clinical training center)

PostDoc, public health and clinical medicine department (Umeå University)

“The more individual training, the better”

IDEATION

IDEATION

Building upon our research findings, we engaged in a brainstorming phase to generate innovative ideas for addressing the identified pain points. Through collaborative sessions with stakeholders, we explored various concepts that could enhance the tangibility of auscultation training while fostering self-learning and repeatability. The goal was to envision a solution that would leverage modern technologies to create a seamless and immersive learning experience.

CONCEPT

CONCEPT

Rough concept wireframing

With a clear direction established, we embarked on the development of the AVA (Augmented Virtual Auscultation) platform. This involved integrating augmented reality technology with auscultation training modules to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Our focus was on designing an intuitive interface that would empower students to engage in independent learning while reducing costs for educational institutions.

VALIDATION

VALIDATION

To ensure the effectiveness and usability of the AVA platform, we constantly sought feedback and testing with stakeholders. User feedback was gathered through prototype demonstrations and simulated training scenarios. By incorporating insights from educators and students, we refined the platform to meet the diverse needs of its users.

DELIVER

DELIVER

The final phase of the project involved fine-tuning the AVA platform based on the feedback received during validation. This iterative process allowed us to optimize user interactions, improve instructional content, and enhance the overall user experience.
Through continuous refinement, AVA emerged as a solution that revolutionizes auscultation training, allowing for increased student independence and cost savings for educational institutions.
